ANGELMAN'S SYNDROME (aka HAPPY PUPPET SYNDROME)

|
Robby 9/26/04 |
As my home page states I am a single mother to three wonderful children. My youngest
is special needs. He is 3 years old and was diagnosed in August 2004 with what is known as Angelman's Syndrome (AS) and
the diagnosis was confirmed Sept. 29, 2004 with a bloodtest specifically looking for this syndrome. From the time he was about
3 months old I knew something was "off" with my little guy. He was stiff all the time, cried the first 2 months of his
life, didn't open his eyes for 9 weeks, etc.. By 11 months old he could "cammando crawl" and finally at 15 months he
could sit up by himself. His motor skills are severly delayed by 18-20 months, he still cannot talk though he hears
fine and he should walk within the next year. Seizures and Scoliosis are common with this syndrome as well. It was a
relief to get a diagnosis on him last year. AS is genetic, effecting chromosome 15 (Downs Syndrome effects chromosome
22). AS is commonly misdiagnosed as either Cerebral Palsy or Autism because it mimcs both of these to a point. As of
Dec. 2004 I am only aware of 5,000 known and confirmed cases of AS between the United States and Canada.
Saturday May 21st 2005 there will be a National AS walk-a-thon fundraiser event
taking place, we will be at the one in Denver, CO. We are looking for sponsors and dontaions to help our cause. If you would
